On the last day of the trade show in Las Vegas, I sat down for a few minutes with Sofie Marie.
To start us off, Sofie reviews what’s happening with her these days.
“This is my second AVN. I'm nominated again this year for hottest MILF,” she begins.
Personally, I can’t think of a better choice!
“About four or five months ago I switched my website Yummy Sophie over to an Elevated X platform. So now it's SofieMariexxx.com,” the statuesque brunette says.
As for the show, Sofie is shooting content and signing for fans.
Now that we’ve settled in, I have some questions about camming. How did she get involved with it?
She began as a bikini model four years ago before starting her website. “I had all this content with my producer” ready to go, Sofie says.
Her fans were asking for scenes and everything “kind of went from there,” Sofie remembers. Because she loves to chat with people, camming was the next logical step to meet more fans and get her “name out there a little more,” she says.
Would Sofie divide her fans into two groups---active and passive---as some cam girls do?
She does have passive fans, Sofie admits, who do not interact directly with her online. They watch her scenes on manyvids, clips4sale, and her website. She thanks them and “they kind of disappear after that,” she says.
As for her active fans, camming with her is “one big party,” Sofie says. The cam girl business model is designed to make the fan feel special and recognized and Sofie loves to do just that.
We talk about a mutual acquaintance, Dan O’Connell, who shot her for GirlFriends Films. Can we conclude that Sofie is doing studio work and camming at the same time?
“In the last year, Dan included, I cammed and worked for other studios hand-in-hand in the same time frame.”
As an established porn girl and cammer who sees adult the business from both sides, does Sofie believe camming is a portal into porn?
That “depends on the girl,” she says, and adds she’s “met a few cam girls this week,” who are interested in branching out into studio porn.
But, that’s not for everyone, Sofie implies.
“Cam girls are all about the one-on-one [experience]. Porn girls are there getting paid, having sex on film with a crew [in the room]. It's just different in that way, but I have found that a lot of cam girls are interested in getting in porn, a little bit at a time.”
The native Californian concedes the difference between camming and porn may be slight.
The cam girl is “with another guy or girl camming and having sex, not particularly on film, but people are watching. And she's getting paid. I guess it's a little different because there's not a crew.”
I mention that some cammers are reluctant to admit they shoot porn. Though she doesn’t understand why they take that position, Sofie suggests those girls see a separation they reinforce with, “No, I'm a cam girl, not a porn star.”
When I suggest that cam girl makes amateur porn, Sofie agrees.
“There's not a professional photographer around. They're just on their own in their house doing their thing, whether it's with another couple, another guy or girl, or solo.”
When it comes to moving from camming into mainstream porn, Sofie comments that studios and agents are interested in how many fans a cam girl has before they hire her.
“I've heard studios say how many followers do you have on Twitter?”
In their view, a cam girl will bring those eyeballs to her studio work.
On the other hand, is it difficult for an established a porn star to become a cam girl?
“I wouldn't think so,” Sofie replies.
“She's established, she has worked for studios, has her name out there and been in the business for a while. If she went over to camming, I would think she would have that following.”
What’s more, Sofie adds, “she can make a decent living depending on the hours [she’s online].”
Are cam girls and porn girls separate businesses?
Not really, Sofie Marie indicates.
“It's all still similar. You can be with a guy or girl and cam and have sex, but there aren't any lights, [for example]. I can see some differences but, I think it's great to intertwine the two.”
